Factory farming: what many people call a modern and conventional farming method. This could not be further from the truth. Factory farming is the intensive farming of animals in small, indoor, enclosed spaces. Many of these animals are never cleaned out, have never had a breath of fresh air in their entire life, are slaughtered inhumanely and live in cramped sheds where disease spreads like anything.
First things first, I would like to make sure that we know with whom we are working: there are 2 types of factory farmed chickens – broiler chickens, kept for meat, and battery chickens, kept for eggs. Broiler chickens are kept in large indoor spaces (but they are only large to serve the purpose of housing about 100,000 chickens, usually more, so they are extremely cramped), whilst battery chickens are kept in cages, stacked on shelves, with no space to move or walk anywhere. And science has proven that chickens actually have human-like feelings.
Broiler chickens are mass produced and live inside for their entire life, except when they are about to be slaughtered. In the first few weeks, it is expected for over 1000 chicks to die due to the terrible conditions and the litter and faeces which they walk on. They are raised on a diet of special pellets which make them grow unnaturally large unnaturally fast, and because of this, many are unable to carry the weight of their enormous breasts on their legs, and many also have deformities from stunted growth in certain areas of their bodies. As they are practically unable to walk, many spend their lives sitting on the litter and therefore lose feathers or develop rashes on their undersides which is very painful and uncomfortable for the chickens. Because they are kept inside for so long they pant a lot and are prone to overheating, passing out and dying. This is also because they are exhausted trying to walk with their unnaturally large bodies.
The chickens are slaughtered at a young age, before they have laid a single egg. When this time comes, they are roughly packed into crates by workers who frequently break chickenâ€™s bones because of the rough way in which they are handled. They are then loaded into a truck where they undergo a very uncomfortable journey, only to be unloaded just as roughly at the end of it. Some chickens will already be dead, and those are the lucky ones. As they are being unloaded, occasionally a chicken will escape. This chicken is chased by a worker with a bag, and sometimes when they realise that they canâ€™t catch the chicken, they will kick the bird. The remaining chickens are carried inside, many with severe injuries, and hooked upside down onto a moving rail. First they go to the stun bath, a bath of water with an electric charge, which is meant to stun them before death and make their slaughter more humane. However, many chickens avoid this simply by raising their heads, and because of this, they go on to the next station, where they will have their throats slit, fully conscious. However, this can also go wrong, and some chickens get past that to the next station, the scalding tank, alive and sometimes fully conscious. This is incredibly inhumane and has to stop. Battery chickens are kept in cramped cages stacked on shelves. They are never cleaned out Â and are treated, in some cases, worse than broiler chickens during slaughter.
